Call for Applications - Assistant Professorship


The School of International Relations at FGV is seeking to appoint up to two full-time Assistant Professors from February 1st, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Successful applicants will be expected to make a strong contribution to research, coordinate and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise students, take an active role in building the School’s program and profile, and make a positive contribution to the professional development of the field of International Relations in Brazil. This position will be based at our São Paulo campus.

Subject specialization in any one of the following fields is desirable but not essential: International Relations Theory, International Environmental Politics, International Political Economy, International Security, and/or Comparative Politics.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD at the time of hire. S/He will be able to provide excellent teaching to high-achieving students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the field of International Relations. Essential criteria also include experience in carrying out independent research and a track record of publications in highly ranked, peer-reviewed journals or major presses. For junior candidates who have not had time after their doctorate to publish in the top journals in the discipline, the selection committee expects a credible case that they are able to secure such publications in the near future. Competitive candidates will also have the willingness and the ability to commit to the full range of academic and administrative duties at the School. These variously include partaking in or leading committees, advising students, and generally sharing the burden of running a range of initiatives (e.g. the Career Center, the International Exchange Program, the Self-Assessment Committee, the Ethics Committee, the Book Club, the Undergraduate Research Training program, etc.). All faculty positions at the School are expected to have a proactive attitude towards institutional development in what is in effect a fast-expanding and intellectually vibrant operation, and these research positions are no exception. Because we are seeking to build a leading center for learning in International Relations in Brazil, we take faculty service extremely seriously.

While teaching and other activities at the School can be conducted in English, passive understanding of Portuguese is necessary and an active commitment to learning the language within two years of hiring a plus.

The starting salary currently stands at R$ 13,868 (Brazilian Reais), and health, pension, and other benefits are competitive with peer institutions.
