Call for Applications - Adjunct Professorship
30/09/2020

The School of International Relations at FGV is seeking to appoint a full-time Adjunct Professor from 1 February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter if suitable candidates apply. The Portuguese-language equivalent for Adjunct Professor at FGV is Professor Agregado.

Successful applicants will be expected to make a strong contribution to the quality of education, take an active role in building the School’s program and profile, teach undergraduate courses with excellence, and make a positive contribution to the professional development of the field of International Relations in Brazil. This position will be based at our São Paulo campus.

The Adjunct Professorship is a non-research position. This means that quarterly plans and career progression are centered on teaching and service rather than publications or the attraction of research grants. This said, Adjunct Professors at FGV RI are encouraged to actively build up their careers as members of the School’s intellectual community, taking part in workshops and seminars, as well as submitting proposals to and attending professional conferences in Brazil and elsewhere.

Subject specialization in any one of the following fields is desirable but not essential: International Relations Theory, International Environmental Politics, International Political Economy, International Security, Comparative Politics, and/or Applied Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences.

The ideal candidate may or may not hold a PhD at the time of hire, but all candidates must have at least some years of graduate training behind them. S/He will be able to provide excellent teaching to high-achieving students at undergraduate level in the field of International Relations. The selection committee expects to see a credible commitment to excellence in the running of a first-class program. Competitive candidates will also have the willingness and the ability to commit to the full range of administrative duties at the School. These variously include partaking in or leading committees, advising students, and generally sharing the burden of running a range of initiatives (e.g. the Career Center, the International Exchange Program, the Self-Assessment Committee, the Ethics Committee, the Book Club, the Undergraduate Research Training program, etc.). All faculty positions at the School are expected to have a proactive attitude towards institutional development in what is in effect a fast-expanding and intellectually vibrant operation, and these non-research positions are no exception. Because we are seeking to build a leading center for learning in International Relations in Brazil, we take faculty service extremely seriously.

Fluent command of Portuguese is essential for this position.

Since 1944 FGV is Brazil’s leading private, nonprofit center for learning focused on research and teaching excellence. Our undergraduate and graduate programs normally achieve top marks in all national rankings. The School of International Relations was officially launched in 2018, and our commitment is to ensure it honors FGV’s tradition of excellence.

FGV is an equal opportunities employer. Promotion of non-research faculty members occurs through internal review reports on individual’s performance in regular cycles set by the School. The starting salary currently stands at R$ 5,479 (for candidates without a doctorate) and R$ 8,372 (for candidates with a doctorate), and health, pension, and other benefits are competitive with peer institutions. Further enquiries can be addressed to the Deputy Dean of FGV RI, Professor Matias Spektor (matias.spektor@fgv.br).

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, and two writing samples to ri@fgv.br. The committee will review applications submitted in either Portuguese or English. Short-listed candidates will be asked to submit draft syllabi and teach a class. The closing date for applications is November 6th, 2020.

When sending your application package, please specify "Adjunct Professor position" in your e-mail’s subject.
