Oral History

This is a list of oral history interviews conducted by our research team on subjects related to nuclear history and politics in Brazil and Argentina. We have also sponsored a Critical Oral History event in 2012 (click here to learn more about Critical Oral History). This list will be constantly updated.

We have conducted over 2000 hours of interviews and are currently in the process of transcribing them. They will be made available online shortly.

Interviewees:

Jair Albo – Former member of the Economic Studies Division at the International Atomic Energy Agency. Also worked at the Brazilian Nuclear Industries.

Marcos Azambuja – Brazilian Ambassador for the United Nations Disarmament Commission (Geneva) (1987-1990); Secretary General of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry (1990-1992); Brazilian Ambassador to Buenos Aires (1992-1997) and Paris (1997-2003).

Rubens Barbosa – Brazilian Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1994-1999 and the United States (1999-2004).

Sebastião do Rego Barros – Brazilian Ambassador to Russia (1990-1994); chief of staff for the Secretary General of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry (1995-1999); Brazilian Ambassador to Buenos Aires (1999-2001); and Director-General of the National Petroleum Agency (2002-2005).

Luis Santana de Carvalho – Former President of the National Nuclear Energy Commission (1990-1992)

Luiz Fernando Conti – Member of the National Nuclear Energy Commission.

Zieli Dutra – Former President of Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A.

Ronaldo Fabrício – Former president of Furnas Centrais Elétricas S. A. Since 2003 he is Executive Vice President of the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities.

Pedro Figueiredo – Former head of the Angra 1 Nuclear Power Plant and director of Furnas Centrais Elétricas S/A. Since 1997 he is a director at Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A.

Gelson Fonseca Junior – Chief of staff for the Secretary General of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry (1988-1990); special advisor to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (1990-1992); Chief Special Advisor to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (1995-1999); head of the Brazilian Mission at the UN (1999-2002); Brazilian Ambassador at Chile (2003- 2006).

José Manuel Diaz Francisco – A specialist in nuclear safety, he served at the International Atomic Energy Agency. Since 2001 he works at Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A.

José Goldemberg – Rector of the University of São Paulo; Federal Secretary of Science and Technology and Minister of Education of Brazil.

Antonio Guerreiro – Brazilian Ambassador to the IAEA (2006-).

Leonam Guimarães – Special Advisor to the President of Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A.

Odair Gonçalves – Current President of the National Nuclear Energy Comission

Luiz Felipe Lampreia – Secretary General of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry (1992-1993); Foreign Minister (1995-2001).

Witold Lepeki – Member of the IAEA International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group.

Rex Nazare – Member of the Pronuclear Project and was the President of the National Nuclear Energy Commission. Former Chief of the Department of Technology of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency. Since 2006 he is the Director of Technology for the Rio de Janeiro State Research Council.

Luiz Augusto de Castro Neves – Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Americas Department (1995-2000); Ambassador to Paraguay (2000-2004), China (2004-2008) and Japan (2008- ).

Antonio Oliveira – Argentinean Representative to the ABACC (2006- ); President of the Argentine Nuclear Regulatory Authority between 2000 e 2001.

Evaldo Césari de Oliveira – Vice-President of Brookfield Energia Renovável S.A.

Othon Pinheiro – President of Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A. (2005-)

João Gabriel Hargreaves Ribeiro – Director of the Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation.

Peter Romero – Former US Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere.

Olga Simbalista – Advisor to the President of Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A.

Luiz Soares – Former official at Furnas Centrais Elétricas S.A. and Eletrobrás Termonuclear S. A. Currently presides the Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation.

Carlos Syllus – Director of Empresas Nucleares Brasileiras S.A. Founder of the Brazilian Institute for Nuclear Quality.

Alfredo Tranjan Filho – President of Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB).

José Israel Vargas – Former chief of the Nuclear Physics Division at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Secretary of Science and Technology for the State of Minas Gerais; Vice-President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and member of the Executive Board of UNESCO. He also served as the Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology.
