The Ethiopic Ocean: History and historiography

When thinking about the Atlantic Ocean’s history, people tend to focus only on what happened on the North Atlantic. Aiming to draw attention to the South Atlantic, the article “The Ethiopic Ocean: History and historiography - 1600-1975” (Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies, n. 27, 2015, p. 1-79) focuses on the existing relationships since the sixteenth century between the countries on the shore of the once-called “Ethiopic Ocean”. We invited Professor Luiz Felipe de Alencastro, from the São Paulo School of Economics of FGV, the author of the article, for further clarification on the history of such Ocean and the trades made possible by it
